Resumen:

Abstract: In October 1884, President Manuel González introduced a bill to Congress for the “consolidation and conversion of the Mexican debt to London.” During the sessions in which this project was discussed, popular discontent arose in public demonstrations which included the active participation of the Mexico City working classes. This paper aims to explore the causes that led workers and craftsmen to take to the streets, by investigating the ways and instances in which they articulated their demands, analyzing the bonds established with other social groups, as well as to examining the role of the workers’ press in this context of popular uprising.
