Abstract:In this brief paper I try to show that Bernal Díaz del Castillo did resort to some of his own previously written texts when he wrote his Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España. At the same time, I intend to prove that this chronicler soldier did not restrict all his personal memories to a mere written expression, at least, not to the narrative form in which he developed almost all his story. This way he keeps within certain passages a distinct oral character.
