Resumen: En la conquista de América participaron diversos grupos. La división y organización del continente americano en provincias y gobernaciones atendió,
en parte, la necesidad de la Corona de limitar el poder de estos grupos de conquistadores
y otros funcionarios reales. En el Norte se crearon la provincia de Pánuco y la Huasteca, las gobernaciones de la Nueva Galicia y Nueva Vizcaya, y a finales del siglo XVI se fundó el Nuevo Reino de León por el capitán Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva, de origen portugués y de ascendencia judía. La historia de este personaje estuvo ligada a disputas entre los grupos de expedicionarios por controlar la expansión hacia el norte de la Nueva España.
Su encarcelamiento y juicio por judaizante en 1589 fue un episodio de esa guerra. En este artículo se analizan su proyecto de conquista y sus principales participantes, así como también su inserción en las altas esferas de la política novohispana.
Abstract: Several groups were involved in the conquest of the American continent.
The division and organization of the Americas into provinces and gobernaciones
responded, in part, to the Spanish Crown’s need to limit the power of these groups of conquerors and other Crown officials. In the North the provinces of Panuco and the Huasteca were created, as well as the gobernaciones of Nueva Galicia and Nueva
Vizcaya. By the end of the sixteenth century the Nuevo Reino de León was founded by Captain Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva, a Portuguese man of Jewish descendant. The history of this important individual was linked to the dispute between expeditionary factions
to control expansion into the North of New Spain. His imprisonment and trial for Judaizing in 1589 was an episode in this war. This paper analyzes his conquest plan and the main participants, as well as his participation in the upper echelons of politics in New Spain.
