Resumen: Después de un año de sesiones, con representantes de todas las corrientes políticas del país, se promulgó la primera Constitución de la historia de México que suprimió la intolerancia religiosa. La Constitución de 1857 fue un hito en la historia constitucional, pues hizo cambios estructurales que acabaron con las supervivencias coloniales que subordinaban el orden civil al militar y al eclesiástico. Suprimió el Estado confesional de las constituciones anteriores y sentó las bases del Estado laico.

Abstract: After a year of meetings with representatives of all political stripes in the country,
the first Constitution in the history of Mexico that suppressed religious intolerance was enacted. The Constitution of 1857 was a landmark in constitutional history, since it made structural changes that did away with colonial survivals that subordinated civil to military and ecclesiastical order. It suppressed the confessional state of prior constitutions and established the foundations of the secular state.
